Open Access Network Infrastructure

Network Design

The design and planning of Open Access Networks is a complex process and must be approached from a strategic standpoint that enables and supports the ongoing commercial development of the network in question and addresses all operational, regulatory and management issues. It must also complement any higher level strategies and initiatives for the provision of backbone network capacity.

InterConnect Communications has extensive experience in the design and planning of fixed underground ducted cable networks and mobile networks using all current transmission media including copper, fibre optic and radio-based technologies. We can assist with full network planning to include:
  • Infrastructure deployment strategies based on customer service demand forecasts, delivery technologies and aggregated estimates for bandwidth;
  • Design and detailed planning of backbone and access networks;
  • Network specification and planning of underground duct and associated inspection chambers;
  • Network specification and planning of cables and splices;
  • Specification and planning of transmission electronics for fixed and radio networks.
InterConnect’s project experience is extensive and covers the production of network strategies, hypothetical network plans, fundamental designs and detailed costed infrastructure layouts. Past work includes:
  • The production of an infrastructure deployment strategy and costed open access network design for designated business parks;
  • The connectivity assessment of a major computer centre site;
  • The design of new access network infrastructure to replace damaged plant and to provide essential telecommunications services after the end of local hostilities.
Involving InterConnect from the outset in the planning of any new network or commercial site will ensure:
  • Integration with existing local government and / or Regional Development Agency strategies and initiatives;
  • Compliance with national or European regulations governing open access networks;
  • Current and future needs of customers are met and future technologies are planned for;
  • Introduction of telecoms infrastructure is fully taken into account in the design and planning of sites;
  • Optimum levels of competition can be introduced;
  • Costs are kept to a necessary minimum.
